Gold in Black Spiral is one of the first gold plated wall-based sculptures Beattie created. The piece is made from copper which has been nickel plated and then gold plated at the centre. The artist is passionate about the contrast between the matt black paint and the gold shiny centre. The piece plugs directly into the wall so there are no obvious fixings.
Mark Beattie is a London based sculptor, whose work has been exhibited internationally alongside artists such as Tracey Emin, the late Lynn Chadwick, Helaine Blumenfeld and Jonathan Yeo.
Working with various metals in all their contrasting properties of texture and finish, Beattie can make industrial metal appear fluid, malleable and delicate. He continues to study different metals, looking for ways to manipulate and add movement to material, and over the past 18 months has been developing ways in which neon or LEDs can complement sculpture, adding movement and catching the viewer’s eye.
