Description

Summer Winter is part of a new series named ‘Esplanade’. For the artist, this is the most important work in her career to date, as it explores the intricacies of her own childhood growing up in an isolated coastal tourist destination.  Hummel-Newell revisited the places where she spent time as a teenager, exploring abandoned seaside fairs and locked up kiosks in the grey winter months. The artist has taken the bright pastel coastal colours or graphic shapes sourced from the memories of fun rides, windbreaks and ice cream advertising together with the eery solitude of winter.

Artist Details

Joanne Hummel-Newell’s work is driven by the instantaneous and forever changing concerns of consciousness.  Human habits and social behaviour inform an improvised process which combines collage, painting, and installation, sometimes of a public nature and not limited to the confines of a gallery.

Carnivals, festivals and other found forms of creative expression fuel the colours and primitive quality of what she creates. The work forms a continuous investigation into representing a human expression which is honest, handcrafted and not designed, with paper being a primary material due to its familiar nature, having been touched by the hands of many.

Joanne Hummel Newell (b 1982) studied at Kingston University London from 2001 – 2004 and at The Royal College of Art, London, from 2004 -2006.
